Victoria examined a Typhoon jet with expert RAF mechanics and sat in the cockpit to see for herself the many demands on fast jet pilots when they are in the air.
Station Commander Jez Attridge and Squadron Leader Rob Perry accompanied Victoria around the base, introducing her to people who live and work there. Victoria discussed the important support provided by community and welfare personnel, including childcare staff and military charities like SSAFA, as well as learning about the study opportunities for RAF personnel.
Squadron Leader Andy Millikin then took Victoria around the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight centre, describing in detail the history of the aircraft and the bravery of all who flew them. Victoria had the privilege of sitting in the cockpit of a spitfire.
Victoria said,
“I was delighted to visit RAF Coningsby and meet the pilots, engineers and ground staff who play a crucial role in keeping our country safe. I wanted to thank them and their families for all they do.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is a national treasure and It was humbling to hear the stories of extraordinary bravery whilst standing in the shadow of these magnificent aircraft.
It was an inspiring day and I would like to thank Station Commander Attridge and his personnel for making me feel so welcome. I will continue to speak up for the RAF family, past, present and future, in Westminster.”
